Mark Ittleman, M.S., CCC/SLP, has been a speech-language pathologist for five decades. He served in the public schools in Florida, had a private practice in Lakeland and Winter Haven, Florida for nearly 20 years, and has specialized in profound speech and language difficulties in children and adults. In 2001 he developed an intensive speech and language stimulation program in Texas with four adults who had severe to profound Broca's aphasia and apraxia of speech. Patients were seen for eight hours, five days a week. Speech and language were stimulated within Activities of Daily Living from the moment they awakened until they went to bed. Family members and Certified Nursing Assistants were simultaneously trained to do speech and language stimulation around the clock. Assessments were performed with formal language samples each week. Mark is a patient advocate and has a love and passion for the field of speech-language pathology. He has an extraordinary zeal for teaching therapists, caregivers, parents, and spouses speech and language stimulation methods for apraxia and aphasia. He teaches therapists and caregivers nationally and internationally. Mark has been referred to by peers as the "speech-language pathologist who can make a rock talk." He now treats patients online through video mentoring and conferencing. He actually does therapy with two people during speech therapy visits. Firstly, the person with aphasia or apraxia, and secondly, the caregiver. Mark highlights how caregivers can learn expert methods and effectively apply them at home to facilitate more speaking opportunities and carry over. Mark also holds online classes for caregivers and family who wish to learn how to help their loved ones speak better at home. Mark honestly believes that training people with speaking difficulites as well as their caregivers or loved ones is the most ideal way to improve talking.
